Think of the handbook as the rulebook for being a Bear — how the day runs, what’s allowed, and how to stay eligible for the stuff you care about. This page pulls out the parts you’ll actually look up. For anything not here, the full handbook is your source of truth.

If you only read three things before school starts, read these.
Phones stay away, all day
Bell to bell. Phones, earbuds, and smartwatches go in your locker or bag from the first bell to the last — not in your pocket.
Show up to stay eligible
Miss more than 10 days in a class per semester and you can lose credit. Pass 5 classes to play, perform, and go to prom.
Wear your ID
You’ll get a school ID and lanyard in the first few weeks. Wear it any time you’re on campus.

Phones & Devices
Under Oklahoma Senate Bill 139, NHS is a bell-to-bell, phone-free campus. Here’s the deal and what happens if a device comes out.
- All devices away, all day — cell phones, smartwatches, and earbuds stay off and put away from the first bell to the last.
- In a locker or bag — not on you. You can’t carry a phone on your person, including your pockets.
- Need to reach home? The office phone is available for school business, and in an emergency the office will get a message to you.

Dress Code, Made Simple
The full rules are in the handbook, but here’s the gist. Aim for what you’d wear to a job or a college class — neat, clean, and covered.
Generally good to go
- Shorts, skirts, and dresses that hit at least mid-thigh
- Jeans, pants, and slacks worn at the waist (no sagging)
- Leggings and jeggings, as long as everything else follows the rules
- Sleeveless tops with fitted armholes that don’t show undergarments
- Shoes — always, and closed-toe if a class requires it
Leave these at home
- Tank tops, spaghetti straps, halters, and racerbacks
- Sheer, mesh, or cropped tops that show your midriff
- Rips or holes above mid-thigh that show skin
- Hats, hoods, and sunglasses worn indoors
- Anything promoting drugs, alcohol, vaping, or with vulgar/violent messages
Out of dress code? You’ll get a chance to fix it — change clothes or have a parent bring something. Admin has the final call on what complies.
Attendance
Showing up matters — for your grades and for keeping credit in your classes.
- The 10-day rule: to get credit for a course, you can’t miss more than 10 days in that class per semester.
- Unexcused adds up: 10 unexcused absences in a semester is considered excessive and may be reported to the District Attorney’s office.
- Semester test exemptions: you may be exempt from one or more finals if you keep a B or better in a class and have no more than 4 absences in it.
- Report an absence: have a parent call the attendance line so it can be excused.
Staying Eligible for Activities
Sports, clubs, dances, prom — they all run on eligibility. Keep these in mind.
Grades
Pass at least five classes at the end of each semester. After that, eligibility is checked weekly. Fail a class (or combination of classes) two weeks in a row and you’re out until you bring it back up.
Attendance & travel
Be at school for at least four periods the day of an activity to take part. Traveling to games and events? You ride school transportation — a parent can request the return trip with the coach or sponsor’s okay.

The scale you’re graded on and the big-picture path to your diploma.

A = 90–100 · B = 80–89 · C = 70–79 · D = 60–69 · F = 0–59

23 units total on the College Prep / Work Ready path — including 4 English, 3 math, 3 science, and 3 social studies.
Get a Head Start
Juniors and seniors can earn college credit through concurrent enrollment, and AP courses carry a 5.0 weight when you take the exam.

Driving & Parking
Driving to school is a privilege — here’s how to keep it. Only seniors get a designated spot.
- Get a permit: register your vehicle in the office with a valid license, tag number, proof of insurance, and $10 (no refunds). Display the permit properly.
- Park where you’re assigned: student parking is south of the main entrance, in your labeled row and space.
- Lots are off-limits during the day: need something from your car? Get a pass from a teacher or admin first — no pass means an “out of area” write-up.
- Drive safe: campus speed limit is 10 mph, yield to buses, and lock your car — the school isn’t responsible for items left inside.
- Different car today? Move your permit to it and let the office know, or you risk losing your parking privileges.
Good to Know
Can I leave for lunch?
Seniors may leave campus for lunch. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors have closed-campus lunch — a parent has to come check you out if you need to leave.
How do I leave class to go to the bathroom or office?
NHS uses the e-hallpass system. You get 3 e-hall passes a day, and your teacher makes the final call. Students on the ineligible list lose their hall-pass allotment until they’re eligible again.
What if I’m tardy?
Head to the office to get an e-hallpass before you’re admitted to class.
Can I have food delivered or bring a guest?
No on both. Delivery services can’t drop food at school, and students can’t bring guests to class or onto campus during the school day.
Where do I find scholarship info?
Check the school website under Senior Scholarships, follow the Counselor’s link, or stop by the counselor’s office — new opportunities are posted throughout the year.
