Elective Classes
Electives are where Bears figure out who they are — on the stage, in the shop, on the field, in the studio, and everywhere in between. They’re grouped below by the earliest grade that can take them, and every one counts toward the 23 units you need to graduate. Questions about what fits your plan? Your counselor is the place to start.
How electives fit your diploma. On the Career Pathways plan (Class of 2030 and beyond), you’ll build 6 units of a career pathway aligned to your ICAP plus 3 additional elective units. On the College Prep path, you’ll need a unit of fine arts or speech — and electives round out your 23. Full requirements live on the Academic Planner & Course Catalog page.
Open to Everyone — Grades 9–12
Freshmen can jump into any of these on day one — from the yearbook room to the band hall to the robotics lab. (A few, like Lab Band, ask for a prerequisite first.)
Creative Writing
English & Academic · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitThis elective class will cover a variety of creative writing assignments. Possibilities include several kinds of poetry, essays, short stories, and plays.
Yearbook
English & Academic · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitDesigned for experienced yearbook or journalism students interested in publishing. Students learn to create layouts, edit copy, photograph people and events, and design personal and business ads for the school yearbook. Students should have desktop publishing skills and must be able to work against deadlines. Participation in fundraising activities may also be required.
Academic Team
English & Academic · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitA competitive academic team course. Preparation and participation in the OSSAA Academic Bowl are the primary goals, with a focus on knowledge obtainment and problem solving from multiple disciplines. Students must try out to be in Academic Team.
ACT Prep
English & Academic · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitAn elective course for college-bound students: test registration information, strategies for taking the ACT, and exercises for improving skills in all areas of the test. Students also research colleges, complete college and scholarship applications, hear guest speakers, visit campuses, and take a pre-test and post-test in each ACT content area.
Arts and Crafts I
Fine Arts · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitLearn about traditional and contemporary crafts, producing functional and/or decorative projects with the tools and techniques of mediums like paint, clay, fabric, metal, wood, and yarn.
Graphic Arts
Fine Arts · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitProcedures and software used in the graphic communication and design industries, with creative problem solving across multiple areas of graphic communications. Extensive use of Adobe Suite products.
Band
Fine Arts · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitContinue to develop musically, responsibly, and individually while learning to work as a group. Members perform at football games, give concerts, and attend in-state and out-of-state competitions. Covers basic music theory and appreciation. Visit the NHS Band page.
Lab Band
Fine Arts · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitPrerequisite: Band. Requires previous playing experience. Study and play Dixieland, twelve-bar blues, swing, and big band arrangements. Basic theory, including chord structures, develops the ability to “ad lib” solos.
Music Appreciation
Fine Arts · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitA basic understanding of music and an appreciation for a variety of genres and cultures, applying the elements of music to favorite songs and investigating how music has changed throughout history.
Vocal Music I
Fine Arts · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitStructured for beginning or intermediate choir students; offers fine arts credit. Learn and perform a wide variety of musical literature for concerts, with basic sight-reading, ear-training, and music theory.
Vocal Productions/Theater
Fine Arts · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitA rigorous live performance art course for both acting and choral students. Express creativity and learn the elements of production — directing, acting, singing, choreography, and design — while practicing and performing live shows. Many practices are after school hours.
Drama I
Fine Arts · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitAn introduction to the theatre: its history and significant plays, plus technical production areas like makeup, lighting, costuming, and set design.
Stagecrafts
Fine Arts · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitThe study of technical theatre — combining visual art, performance, technology, vocational training, industrial arts, design, business management, architecture, drafting, cultural history, and theatrical arts. Students develop real-world skills and create products and sets for the Vocal Productions/Theater class.
Competitive Speech
Fine Arts · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitAn advanced course for competitive speech and acting: preparation for and competition in interscholastic contests, a personal portfolio and repertoire, and participation in theatrical productions. After-school and some Saturday participation is required.
Spanish I
World Languages · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitAn introduction to the Spanish language stressing listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing, with grammar as an important component, plus the geography and culture of Spanish-speaking countries.
Spanish II
World Languages · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitPrerequisite: Spanish I. Intermediate language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing with continued emphasis on grammatical structure and continued study of the geography, history, and culture of Spanish-speaking countries.
German I
World Languages · Grades 9–11 · 1 unitAn introduction to pronunciation, basic comprehension, and communication in German through active class use of simple vocabulary, grammar, and syntax, with culture and contemporary events of German-speaking regions throughout.
Latin
World Languages · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitAn introductory exploration of Latin and the world of the ancient Romans: a strong foundation in vocabulary and grammar for translating texts, plus Roman history and culture, Greek and Roman mythology, and the classical world’s influence on modern society.
Physical Education
PE & Athletics · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitFitness concepts and conditioning techniques for optimal physical fitness: comprehensive weight training, cardiorespiratory endurance, and the fundamentals of strength, aerobic, and overall fitness training.
Physical Education — Event Based
PE & Athletics · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitTrain for and complete local strength and/or endurance events throughout the school year. Designed for students not enrolled in competitive athletics who want to stay healthy and fit. Event entry fees are required.

PE — Strength and Conditioning
PE & Athletics · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitPrerequisite: enrollment in Competitive Athletics. The main year-round training component of NHS competitive athletics, using periodized exercise prescription to improve athlete and team performance.
E-Sports I
PE & Athletics · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitA structured esports program focused on teamwork, communication, strategy, and sportsmanship: competitive gameplay, practice sessions, and analysis of game mechanics and team performance, plus leadership, digital citizenship, and gaming-related career pathways. Leadership — Student Council
Leadership · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitPrerequisite: teacher approval; application required. All aspects of leadership: self-awareness, leadership theories and styles, communication, organization, group processes, problem solving, and evaluation — applied to school activities. Students must be able to work outside class time for community service hours and school activity requirements.
Agriscience I
Ag Education · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitPrerequisite for all agriculture courses. An introductory course on the broad scope of agriculture-related industries: leadership skills, record keeping, public speaking, history of the organization, and an introduction to all upper-level course offerings.
Intro. to Adulting
Family & Consumer Science · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitA full-year course in consumer education, child development, personal and family relationships, housing and home management, clothing and textiles, and career education — with hands-on experience in cooking, sewing, planning children’s activities, and home projects. FCCLA is an integral part of the program.
Broadcast Production
STEM & Computers · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitCustomer service, marketing, project management, and professionalism through video-based projects for broadcast production, building a professional portfolio with advanced video editing and production skills. Fundamentals of Web Design
STEM & Computers · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitFundamental web authoring skills and design strategies through XHTML with Cascading Style Sheets and future trends in web programming and scripting, then WYSIWYG editors and graphics applications to produce standards-based websites.

Multimedia & Image Management

Introduction to Engineering Design

Fundamentals of Technology
STEM & Computers · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitComputer Technology I skills, including utilizing and manipulating data through a database application. Integrating multiple applications builds critical thinking as students choose the right tools to complete case projects.
Robotics Engineering / Advanced Robotics
STEM & Computers · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitDesign, build, program, and control robotic devices. A rigorous study of electrical concepts — energy sources, electrical safety, electronic components, sensors, and actuators — plus mechanical design, prototype development, design testing, programming, and proper engineering documentation.
Drone Technology
STEM & Computers · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitEssential theory and design concepts of small unmanned aircraft systems: airframes, electronic motors, propellers, and the basic knowledge required to successfully pilot a drone.
Computer Applications I
STEM & Computers · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitAn introduction to problem solving using computers and software, focused on the Microsoft Office applications.
Computer Applications II
STEM & Computers · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitAn expansion of Computer Applications I skills: data analysis, pivot tables, and advanced functions within the Microsoft Office Suite.
Computer Programming CAD — SolidWorks
STEM & Computers · Grades 9–12 · 1 unitSolidWorks is an industry-recognized CAD program used extensively in fabrication and engineering design. Students use SolidWorks to assist Fabrication Lab students in designing new and improved products.
Before You Suit Up
Students in Competitive Athletics need a current sports physical on file — forms and details are on the Athletic Physical Forms page. Eligibility rules (pass five classes, weekly checks) live in the NHS Handbook.
Sophomores & Up — Grades 10–12
These open up in 10th grade — many build on a 9th-grade intro course, so plan your sequence with your counselor.
Art I
Fine Arts · Grades 10–12 · 1 unitPrerequisite: Arts and Crafts or teacher approval. An introduction to the Elements and Principles of Design in a studio arranged for team development and instructor guidance, with an introduction to the basic mediums used in art.
Art II
Fine Arts · Grades 10–12 · 1 unitPrerequisites: Art I and teacher approval. For the serious artist: thirty technical drawings across every style, perspective techniques, proportion, tessellations, and the formal rules of design — no tracing at this level. Fast-paced, building drawing and problem-solving skills.
Sculpture I
Fine Arts · Grades 10–12 · 1 unitPrerequisite: Arts and Crafts or Art I. Basic sculpture techniques — carving, casting, modeling, and welding — with emphasis on line, plane, shape, and volume, using plaster, metal, clay, and wood.
Vocal Music II — Treble Choir
Fine Arts · Grades 10–12 · 1 unitStructured for advanced choir students. Learn and perform varied musical literature in concerts and contests. Performances count toward the grade and rehearsals may be held after school — this is a competitive choir with a high commitment level.
Drama II
Fine Arts · Grades 10–12 · 1 unitPrerequisite: Drama I. Advanced knowledge and application of theatre, primarily in performance, with special focus on improv, acting styles, directing, and playwriting. Includes scene work, monologues, a final public performance, and intense study of a variety of plays — some rehearsal and performance after school hours.
Spanish III
World Languages · Grades 10–12 · 1 unitPrerequisite: Spanish II. Focus on Hispanic culture and history through reading and discussion in Spanish, including short stories and poetry from a variety of Hispanic countries, plus advanced grammar structures.
German II
World Languages · Grades 10–12 · 1 unitPrerequisite: German I. A continuation of German I with further introduction to the language and cultures of German-speaking countries, practicing listening, reading, writing, and speaking through in-class activities and homework.
Outdoor PE
PE & Athletics · Grades 10–12 · 1 unitOffered in conjunction with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation outdoor education initiative, including the Varsity Archery Program, Explore Bowhunting, and Hunter Education in the Schools.
Agricultural Power and Technology I
Ag Education · Grades 10–12 · 1 unitPrerequisite: Agriscience I. Safety, operation, maintenance, and use of agricultural power, electronics, machinery and equipment, structures and utilities, soil and water management, and agricultural mechanics, including welding and cutting.

Family & Consumer Science · Grades 10–12 · 1 semester · ½ unitAn introduction to fashion marketing and merchandising: basic fashion concepts and marketing terminology, fashion cycles, key components of the industry, retail merchandise categories, and fashion promotion, plus industry globalization, social media, sustainability, and career skills.
